Today, the Attorney General gave consent to initiate contempt proceedings against stand-up comedian Kunal Karma who made tweets against the honourable Supreme Court of India. The Attorney General agreed that his tweets are highly objectionable and have crossed the line between humour and contempt of court.
A Suit has been filed in Mumbai court by Iqbal Shaikh, former assistant commissioner of police seeking to restrain Republic TV from discussing or referring to the FIR registered by the Mumbai police alleging manipulation of TRP ratings. He also seeks damages of Rs. 5 lakh to the mental agony caused to the plaintiff on account of the “defamatory reports” against Mumbai police.
Kappan (journalist) was arrested on October 5 by Uttar Pradesh police while he was on his way to cover the HATHRAS rape incident. A PIL has been moved in the honourable Supreme Court seeking release of Kappan as the arrest was in total violation of guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court in DK Basu v. State of West Bengal.
At the constitution day celebration organised by SCBA today, the Attorney General KK Venugopal spoke about the pendency of cases and judicial delays. While he mentioned that the poor and middle class are affected due to judicial delays whereas not rich and corporate companies. He also mentioned that, after the end of coronavirus, the pendency of cases will become much higher.
