Name of the organization where you interned and its full address

Lokayukta Jharkhand, Office of the Lokayukta Jharkhand, Booty Road, Ranchi- 834008.

Phone Number: 0651-2360633

Duration of internship

4 weeks, i.e. from 2nd January 2020 till 29th January 2020.

Work Hours: 10:00 A.M. till 2:00 P.M.

The work hours are very flexible with court hearings on alternate days. On the remaining days, mostly office work is done and interns are made to read case files and their judgment contention.

How did you apply?

I went to the office to apply for the internship since it is my hometown. You have to physically submit a CV, Letter of Recommendation issued by the college/university and an Internship letter consisting of pursuing course and past experiences (if any).

On submission, I was interviewed by the Secretary to Lokayukta who approved my internship after a few casual questions.

First day formalities, infrastructure, first impression

My first day was very informative. Upon reaching the office, I was briefed about what the Lokayukta was and how it works, file cases, nature of cases entertained, investigation process, etc.

Later, we had a small interview with the Lokayukta, Hon’ble Justice D. N. Upadhyay, who asked us about our aspirations and goals for the future and why I chose to pursue law as a career. The infrastructure is great since it is a newly constructed office. The campus is good as well.

Main tasks

My role at the Lokayukta was basically to create an analysis of Lokayukta Acts of different states and compare a few of them. Other tasks involved attending court sessions, going through case files (both decided and undecided cases) and understanding what types of cases are entertained in the Lokayukta.

Work environment

The work environment was excellent and we had absolutely no problems during the internship period. The people at the office are quick in their jobs and were always ready to help and guide us wherever possible.

Good things

Best thing for me was to get an internship under Hon’ble Justice in the first place. Flexible timings, little work load, short office durations and supportive people around us was the best thing. Also, there are many refreshment stalls nearby so you can grab snacks after work.

Bad things

Interns had no separate rooms or desks. Lack of work for the interns. No ID Cards for anyone, which makes the office less secure.

Stipend

No stipend.

Accommodation, commuting to office

Ranchi is my hometown so there was no need for any accommodation or public transport. However, the office is situated in a locality with many important offices with the availability of lots of PGs and Hostels nearby. For commuting, various public transport modes are available.

Anything else? Like: what you did to chill out, lessons learnt, etc

Lokayukta offers internships to students from any year of study so I suggest it would be very helpful for any student to intern at this place as you get to learn a lot about the functioning of quasi-judicial bodies and regular interactions with practicing advocates.

About Organization

Lokayukta, meaning “civil commissioner”, is an anti-corruption ombudsman organization in Indian states. They are the institutional manifestations of the need to provide a quasi-judicial body, which would act as a watchdog to pinpoint wrongdoings of the administration, look into complaints of the victims of corrupt elements and suggest measures to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of our Government.
